Smasher is an unprecedented user modification of the classic Urei 1176 compressor circuit, a unique formula that we came across when tweaking other algorithms.
The original hardware of the 1176 compressor offered a choice of four ratios, but studio engineers soon found that tapping them simultaneously resulted in a distorted, explosive, and highly compressed sound. It was this “All Buttons in” or “British” mode that was carefully designed by Smasher to recreate.
